Laser etching

Laser etching, or etching, is a unique technology for treating surfaces on which a single thick layer or multiple base layers are applied. Using a suitable laser, a deep and selective removal of the deposited layers can be achieved, in order to change the physical properties of the surface, such as transparency or electrical conductivity. This distinguishes the etching process from the decoating process, while still allowing the creation of graphics for design purposes. It is widely used in the production of interior plastics with a functional surface, which is the basis for touch panels, door panels and decorative cockpit panels.

Capacitive sensors

This technology allows removing layers in high resolution, making it possible to produce not only functional but also decorative graphics. In this respect, it is therefore similar to laser decoating. The fundamental difference of laser etching is the deep removal of deposited layers. If suitable (e.g., dielectric) layers are applied, it is possible to modify the electrical conductivity of the part surface and the laser-machined area can be used as a capacitive button.

Transparent technological signage

Laser etching can also be used for deep evaporation of the surface part of a given material, making it possible to change the surface morphology of the part without changing its texture and color. This phenomenon is used in the creation of technological signs, including serial number, product numbers or other symbols on the visible areas of transparent parts. As the surface shape of the part changes in the area affected by the laser, the text can only be seen when correctly illuminated, otherwise the customer can hardly even register its presence.

Cost savings and environmental protection

Laser etching technology is difficult to replace with conventional etching technologies. Acceptable substitutes mostly require the use of hazardous consumables (acid). In addition, laser etching production is a one-step process, with higher accuracy, which does not require any part modifications prior to or after the application of laser, and it does not require additional inputs. Thanks to these advantages, the technology effectively reduces the total cost of production and its cycle time. It is a greener solution that can be easily integrated into existing production.

Additional services

Laser etching can be used for various paints, varnishes and metal layers in various combinations. The removal process completely avoids disturbing the underlying material.

For this technology, we offer a standardized, manually loaded Vario Compact cell with internal dimensions of 1500 x 1000 x 500 mm, and the possibility of implementing up to 4 axes. Adding camera-based analysis of a selected part with verification of its position is also an option.

Selected projects

Selective laser removal of multilayer spray without damaging the base material.
